1NT – Keri
This is designed in the context of a strong 1NT of 15-18 but
will be equal
ly applicable for 15-17. The system permits opening of 1NT with a
5 card major
but acknowledges, it will miss some 5-3 major fits.
In the text below openers bids and their explanation will be
in black, res
ponders in blue.

available). Avoid with 1345 precisely
.
?
· 3NT = strong opposite singleton.

now responder step bid is RKC for set suit
· 3N is to play and warns of considerable wasted values but 2+
stops.
4C shows slam interest and requires opener to set a
suit
Opener sets suit
(shortage = clubs, 4N = no fit!)
responder step bid is then RKC for set suit.
1N - 3NT to play
1N - 4C transfer to hearts
4N is now RKC
1N - 4D transfer to spades
4N is now RKC
Interference
1N-( X):
if, X is non-penalty then ignore
else, normal newlands escapes (XX->2C or majors;2C->2D
etc)
1N-(2C): X = I was about to bid 2C, bid 2D as normal.
1N-(2D) or higher: Lebensohl
1N-( P)-2C-( X) : assuming this shows clubs
?
· 2D as normal but with a club stop
· Pass no club stopper, then responders XX forces 2D.
· XX is to play with good clubs
pass
2D is to play
other bids have normal meaning, as if opener bid 2D.
1N-( P)-2C-(2D) :
?
· Pass = opener bidding 2D and everything as normal.
· X = penalty
1N-( P)-2C-(2HS3C) :
?
· X = penalty but must have diamonds so responder can run to 3D if
he has the
weak hand.
· Usually pass if cannot double and leave it to responder
when2S,3C,3D would be invite and rest FG (inc. 2NT).
1N-( P)-2D or 2H - ( X) :
?
· pass = 2 in transfer suit;
· transfer = 3;
· XX = 4.
1N-( P)-2S-( X) : presumably this shows spades so
· 2N = min + stop
· 3C = max + stop
· Pass = no stop and
responder XX forces range statement
· XX = play here, I have strong spades
Things to Remember
1N-2C-2D-2NT is a major enquiry
3H,S shows 5 cards
3D shows any 4333
3C shows all others
1N-2D-2H-2NT (and spade analogue) shows a minor is held and asks
for descripti
on
3C shows no fit and asks for singleton
3D shows fit and asks for minor
3M (H in this example) shows strong support and slammy
3OM (S in this example) shows own 5 card suit (no H support)
4M support but no slam interest.
1N-2D-2H-2S is F1 with 4H and 5S
1N-2H-2S-3H is FG with 4S and 5H
This facilitates invitation with 5-4 majors by
1. with 5H and 4S bid 1N-2C-2D-2H and heart fit is found or opener
bids 2S/N
2. with 5S and 4H bid 1N-2D-2H-2S and opener will bid 2N,3H,3S
with min. And 3
C( H), 3D( S), 3N
with max.
Many responder hands with a 5 card major bid better going via
2C-2D-2N rather
than the transfer:
it is the pricipal way of playing 3N rather than 4M.
